Disaster recovery is the primary reason that many companies deploy server resources at multiple locations. The Q-Balancer Global Server Load Balancing (GSLB) has the ability to globally distribute the load across distributed servers. This allows distribution of traffic to be performed efficiently across application servers that are dispersed geographically.

The Q-Balancer GSLB is a DNS based system that manipulates DNS response based on the source of DNS request and availability of the data centers. The appliance performs health checks to assess the real time performance and responsiveness of the servers. Application load at each location is managed, and client requests are generally sent to closer servers to ensure minimal latency and maximum performance.

For example, when a client HTTPS request is sent and received by the Q-Balancer appliance, the appliance obtains the client’s IP address and check its GSLB policy. Simultaneously, the Q-Balancer appliance performs health checks to assess the real time performance and responsiveness of the servers. Finally, the Q-Balancer appliance forwards the request to the web server that is nearest geographically or has the shortest response time.
